WE HAVE A BIRTHDAY BOY TODAYAfter the horrendous day of rain yesterday, today the sun is shining, everything feels fresh, my cat is happy and it is someone's birthday! HELICOPTER RIDES AND ALPUJARRA JOURNEYS, ALMOND BLOSSOM AND HIGH VILLAGES I am not saying which birthday, except that it is a few years after the 21st! Last year was a special one and it was celebrated by a treat from me of a helicopter journey from Ceuta in North Africa to Malaga Airport. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Want some more of that! 100 euros per person per journey, and for a treat, it is well worth it Today, no such excitement, but we are having one of our days out with a special lunch. The start time is 10am..we are very organised! We left the house just after 11am! My fault as I had to speak to my builder and got carried away with bricks and mortar. We have decided to go up into the Alpujarra mountain range. To get there you set off from Torrox, take the motorway and then the beautiful coast road until you are just past Solabrena, where you turn off onto the Granada road (this takes about half an hour). Stay on, through the awesome gorge (which is a wonderful sight) and then take the turning to the right signposted Alpujarras. For about a mile you are overlooking the large dam which has recently been built (I have a phobia about dams, so can't talk about it!) and you are heading into quite wild countryside. The almond blossom is out and is very beautiful. Did you know there are two colours of almond blossom? There is the white and the delicate pink and when growing together it is a lovely sight. But, oh, was it windy when we gotr out of the car to have a coffee! Good drying day but you couldn't stay on your feet long to peg it out! BUBION We then headed up to the high village of Bubion, where it wasn't so cold but cool and sunny. This is a very different village from Torrox, all the roofs are flat and roughly concreted. I thought at first all the builders had walked off site! But no, this is just how they are. Don't know if I could live with that. I like my roofs tiled as a terrace, just as they are here in Torrox village. Lunch was a very nice affair. The mixture of dishes included Wild Boar, Goat, Pork in Tomato Spicy Sauce and Rape (Monk Fish)with mussels, prawns and peppers. The journey back was through Larjarron, which is a spa town where some of the bottled water you can buy in shops and cafes comes from. You often see the artics bearing the name of Larjarron. Then back onto the coast road. Torrox, in my opinion, is ideally placed as a tour base. Nowhere is very far away and Granada, Cordoba are only 2 to 3 hours away. The beach is 3K away and the countryside is really any distance you want it to be.
